Digital Americana at Southeast Missouri State University

“Louise Marler: Digital Americana” will be on display Oct. 1–Nov. 14 in the Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museum at Southeast Missouri State University’s River Campus.

An opening reception will be held Friday, Oct. 1 from 4–8 p.m. with an artist’s talk at 5:30 p.m. Admission is free. Face coverings are required.

Marler’s artistic style integrates modern digital photography with her passion for vintage items. The result is a composite of thought and form. She seeks to create art collections and events that integrate history, education, and entertainment. She is influenced by her father, who collected and repaired old typewriters.

Marler said, “My objective is beauty rooted in truth and humor and simple by design. Inspired by vintage Americana as well as pop artists such as Ed Rusche, Andy Warhol, Roy Litchenstein, and Jeff Brouws, I bring these antiquated sentiments forward in contemporary statements. Fascinated by machinery as well as nature, I create beauty from mundane matter. Deliberately focusing on the pure essentials of an image, I am fascinated by the shadow, negative space, abstract composition, architectural geometry, and organic beauty of landscapes. With an adventurous spirit, I explore techniques. My favorite personal statement is, ‘You never know unless you try.’”

Marler’s artwork has been exhibited nationally in galleries and seen in film and TV shows, including “Two and a Half Men,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “The Mentalist,” “Criminal Minds,” “Bernie Mac,” “Rules of Engagement,” and “Friends with Benefits.” She also appeared as a guest in the documentary “The Typewriter in the 21st Century.” For more information on Marler and her work, visit www.lamarler.com.
